<p>How many times have you gone to sleep at night, swearing you&#8217;ll go to the gym in the morning, and then changing your mind just eight hours later because when you get up, you don&#8217;t feel like exercising?</p>
<p>While this can happen to the best of us, it doesn&#8217;t mean you should drop the ball altogether when it comes to staying fit. What people need to realize is that staying active and eating right are critical for long-term health and wellness &#8212; and that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. </p>
<p>The more you know about how your body responds to your lifestyle choices, the better you can customize a nutrition and exercise plan that is right for you. When you eat well, increase your level of physical activity, and<br />
exercise at the proper intensity, you are informing your body that you want to burn a substantial amount of fuel. This translates to burning fat more efficiently for energy.</p>
<p>In other words, proper eating habits plus exercise equals fast metabolism, which, in turn gives you more energy throughout the day and allows you to do more physical work with less effort.</p>
<p>The true purpose of exercise is to send a repetitive message to the body asking for improvement in metabolism, strength, aerobic capacity and overall fitness and health. Each time you exercise, your body responds by upgrading its capabilities to burn fat throughout the day and night, Exercise doesn&#8217;t have to be intense to work for you, but it does need to be consistent.</p>
<p>I recommend engaging in regular cardiovascular exercise four times per week for 20 to 30 minutes per session, and resistance training four times per week for 20 to 25 minutes per session. This balanced approach provides a<br />
one-two punch, incorporating aerobic exercise to burn fat and deliver more oxygen, and resistance training to increase lean body mass and burn more calories around the block.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a sample exercise program that may work for you:</p>
<p>* Warm Up &#8212; seven to eight minutes of light aerobic activity intended to increase blood flow and lubricate and warm-up your tendons and joints.</p>
<p>* Resistance Training &#8212; Train all major muscle groups. One to two sets of each exercise. Rest 45 seconds between sets.</p>
<p>* Aerobic Exercise &#8212; Pick two favorite activities, they could be jogging, rowing, biking or cross-country skiing, whatever fits your lifestyle. Perform 12 to 15 minutes of the first activity and continue with 10 minutes of the<br />
second activity. Cool down during the last five minutes.</p>
<p>* Stretching &#8212; Wrap up your exercise session by stretching, breathing deeply, relaxing and meditating.</p>
<p>When starting an exercise program, it is important to have realistic expectations. Depending on your initial fitness level, you should expect the following changes early on.</p>
<p>* From one to eight weeks &#8212; Feel better and have more energy.</p>
<p>* From two to six months &#8212; Lose size and inches while becoming leaner. Clothes begin to fit more loosely. You are gaining muscle and losing fat.</p>
<p>* After six months &#8212; Start losing weight quite rapidly.</p>
<p>Once you make the commitment to exercise several times a week, don&#8217;t stop there. You should also change your diet and/or eating habits,&#8217; says Zwiefel. Counting calories or calculating grams and percentages for certain nutrients is<br />
impractical. Instead, I suggest these easy-to-follow guidelines:</p>
<p>* Eat several small meals (optimally four) and a couple of small snacks throughout the day</p>
<p>* Make sure every meal is balanced &#8212; incorporate palm-sized proteins like lean meats, fish, egg whites and dairy products, fist-sized portions of complex carbohydrates like whole-wheat bread and pasta, wild rice, multigrain cereal and potatoes, and fist-sized portions of vegetable and<br />
fruits</p>
<p>* Limit your fat intake to only what&#8217;s necessary for adequate flavour</p>
<p>* Drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of water throughout the day</p>
<p>* I also recommend that you take a multi-vitamin each day to ensure you are getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs.</p>
<p>I suppose that&#8217;s all I can think of for now. I should extend my thanks to a doctor friend of mine. Without him, I wouldn&#8217;t be able to write this article, or keep my sanity.</p>

<p>   3. Lean cold meat<br />
      Another good source of protein, lean, cold meats such as ham or turkey can be sliced up and served with salad for a quick, low fat meal. Just remember to not spoil the meal with sugary condiments. Use your imagination, and besides fresh herbs can&#8217;t be beat for flavor.</p>
<p>   4. Vegetables<br />
      Steamed vegetables are full of nutrition and contain many necessary vitamins and minerals. Choose a variety such as carrots, broccoli, zucchini, cauliflower. Don&#8217;t forget to get plenty of raw veggies as well.</p>
<p>   5. Salads<br />
      All sorts of salads are a great addition to your dinner. Use rocket, baby spinach, lettuce mixed with cucumber, tomatoes, avocados, etc. Raw foods have enzymes and life force that cooked foods do not so be sure to always include them as much as possible.</p>
<p>   6. Soup<br />
      An excellent light meal, make a fresh pot of vegie soup with any left overs you may have. Serve with a couple of slices of wholegrain bread. Adding a bit of your favorite meat can add in important protein to balance out the meal.</p>
<p>   7. Baked beans<br />
      If you’re short of time and want a nutritious meal, full of fibre and low in fat, baked beans are an easy meal to prepare. I would suggest adding in some of your favorite meat for some protein or perhaps a hard boiled egg or two on the side.</p>
<p>   8. Eggs<br />
      High in protein, eggs are another quick and easy meal to prepare. Poached, scrambled, boiled or an omelette are the healthiest ways to prepare eggs. They have actually been proven to be heart healthy and overall good for you so don&#8217;t miss out on one of Nature&#8217;s most perfect foods by buying into the BS being spouted off by people not in the know.</p>
<p>   9. Legumes<br />
      Great for vegetarians, legumes such as chickpeas and kidney beans are full of nutrition and very low in fat. Add to a vegie curry or salad. Combine these with beans for a complete protein meal. My suggestion is to again, use a variety of healthy fats such as avocado and/or olive oil along with fresh herbs for taste w/o the cals. Another fav of mine is to use salsa, healthy veggies and almost no calories!</p>
<p>  10. Mushrooms<br />
      Extremely nutritious, low in fat and high in fibre, mushrooms can be added to a rice dish or served on toast with eggs. One of my favorites is to grill big ole portabellas with fresh herbs and some cheese on top! Yummo!</p>
<p>  11. Brown rice<br />
      A much better alternative to any of the white rices, brown rice is low GI and low fat. Serve with fish or chicken and vegies for a complete, healthy meal. Just remember not to go nuts on this as you don&#8217;t want too many carbs generally speaking. Always eat with some protein and healthy fat to further balance out the effects on your insulin levels.</p>
<p>  12. Fruit<br />
      Rather than finishing your meal with a dessert, have a piece of fruit instead if you’re really wanting to lose weight. I would keep this serving small and space it away from your main meal as many times for many people it can cause GI distress via bad fermentation in the gut. Remember that even though they are natural, it&#8217;s still sugar, so keep fruit to a minimum if your going to eat it at all until you have reached your weight goals.</p>
<p>  13. Yoghurt<br />
      A good source of calcium, I suggest adding in extra nuts or ground flaxseeds for healthy fats vs fruit. Getting Greek yoghurt is very important as &#8216;regular&#8217; yogurt is low in protein and high in sugar which is a bad combo for losing weight!</p>
<p>  14. Dark chocolate<br />
      A couple of pieces of dark chocolate are a nice way to end your meal. Just be sure its at least 85-86+% dark chocolate and not filled with a bunch of sugar and other junk which would defeat the purpose. Stay far far away from artificial flavoring and sweeteners as these have been proven to be carcinogenic, neurotoxic, and ironically contribute to weight loss by screwing up your body&#8217;s systems even though they are calorie free. Go with natural sweeteners such as stevia and xylitol.</p>
<p>  15. Red wine<br />
      Like dark chocolate, red wine is full of anti-oxidants and a glass with your evening meal is a nice way to relax. RED, not white, wine is also low carb so it&#8217;s a guilt free pleasure.
